Facades/Structural Project Engineer - Somercotes
We are currently looking for an enthusiastic individual to join our Bespoke Engineering team in the position of Facades/Structural Project Engineer.
This position serves as a technical resource for structural engineering, design detailing, and project scheduling for client approval and subsequent manufacture of bespoke precast, box culvert, and facade projects.
Working within a collaborative team environment, the role will have daily responsibility as the primary point of contact for assigned contracts. This includes direct liaison with clients, contractors, engineers, and relevant authorities (such as water and local authorities and the highways agency), as well as close internal coordination with the contracts/planning department and the factory.
The position ensures compliance with strict design codes, project specifications, and timeline requirements, supporting the successful delivery of both structural and facade components.
Your duties would include but not limited to the following:
- Design Calculations: Conduct a thorough review of project design specifications and drawings to identify applicable codes, load conditions, and specific client requirements. This process will determine correct precast concrete element sizing, special features, concrete thickness, and reinforcement needs. Prepare a comprehensive set of structural calculations to demonstrate compliance and submit them to the client and relevant parties for formal approval.
- Detailing: Develop detailed product sections, plans, and elevations to illustrate the precast element profile, load conditions, joint alignments, directional changes, and required openings. Through this process, identify the variations and special precast concrete components necessary to complete the project. Submit drawings for client approval and address queries and revisions as they arise.
- Scheduling: Prepare detailed fabrication drawings, works orders, reinforcement bending schedules, and cutting schedules to support accurate and efficient production. Include specifics on transportation logistics, orientation, sequencing, additional requirements, and any non-standard specifications.
- Design Optimization: Throughout the design, detailing, and scheduling processes, prioritize cost-effectiveness by evaluating material, labour, and transportation costs. Develop solutions that optimize resource efficiency while meeting project requirements.
- Liaison: Collaborate with external stakeholders to confirm design requirements, resolve technical questions, and expedite the receipt of information and approvals to uphold production and delivery timelines. Maintain effective communication with internal departments (planning, production, etc.) to ensure smooth coordination of project changes, delays, and additional requirements.
- Dispute Resolution & Contract Variations: Identify significant project variations from the original tender specifications and assess and submit these to estimating/surveying. Facilitate timely and appropriate handling of claims, ensuring that contract variations are addressed in a manner that supports project integrity and client satisfaction.
About You:
- Ability to read drawings and specifications, interpret and extract relevant details in order to establish design requirements for precast components
- Demonstrate an understanding of design codes (BS5400, BS8110 & EC2, highways specifications, water and local authority specifications) be able to interpret these and convert them into appropriate load cases and design requirements.
- Prepare structural design calculations and be able to converse and describe them confidently and in detail with clients, engineers and approving authorities.
- Be competent and confident in the use of software design packages such as AutoCAD and familiar in the use of complex spreadsheets.
- Experienced in the design and scheduling of reinforcement including preparation of bar bending schedules
- General practical experience of construction and/or civil engineering projects in particular sewerage and drainage projects.
- Capable in project management of bespoke projects and ability to work with and achieve critical time constraints.
Education / Qualification:
Preferred
- 2 to 5 years’ experience in concrete design / civil engineering environments
- BSC Civil Engineering/ Structural Engineering or similar
Minimum
- Graduate in Civil Engineering/ Structural Engineering or similar
