Summary

 

Freedom is looking for an experienced and forward-thinking Senior Environmental Consultant to join our growing Environmental Land Management (ELM) team. This role will focus on environmental land management operations and compliance across companywide projects, ensuring tangible benefits to the environment.

 

You will play a key role in developing and delivering environmental consultancy services, including preparing Construction Environmental Management Plans (CEMPs), securing environmental consents and permits, conducting audits and inspections, and overseeing project operations and compliance. This is a client-facing role that requires collaboration with internal teams, subcontractors, and key stakeholders.

 

Some of the Key Deliverables

 

The post holder will be a key part a multi-discipline delivery team, working closely with Operation and Project Managers, and technical consultants across Freedom Group, delivering the following services:

  • Support the ELM Operations Manager and Sustainability Manager in delivering existing contracts and expanding the ELM service offering.
  • Conduct audits, inspections, and provide environmental advice for Distribution Network Operator (DNO) schemes.
  • Lead or oversee the preparation of CEMPs for design and build projects.
  • Manage environmental consents and permits, including SSSI assents, FRAPs, and other regulatory approvals.
  • Oversee and manage operations for both existing and prospective projects.
  • Supervise subcontractors and ensure compliance with environmental, health and safety, and certification standards.
  • Provide technical environmental land management advice, ensuring practical delivery of land management activities.
  • Manage multiple project sites, ensuring efficient delivery within budget and timescales.
  • Produce and review technical reports to maintain high-quality standards.
  • Monitor contract compliance and audit project performance.
  • Maintain financial records, including budgeting and pricing for new projects.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships and support business development efforts.

 

What We’re Looking For

 

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Environmental Consultant with a strong background in environmental compliance, land management, and consultancy. The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience in environmental/land management consultancy (minimum 5 years at Manager or Senior Advisor level).
  • Strong knowledge of land-based industries (Construction, Forestry, Ecology, Landscape Management).
  • Proven expertise in environmental compliance, including consents, audits, and CEMP production.
  • Familiarity with UK and/or Scottish environmental legislation and consenting processes.
  • Experience in project management, including land management, habitat creation, and estate infrastructure.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a compliance-driven environment.
  • Strong commercial awareness, budgeting skills, and experience in pricing project work.
  • Ability to prioritise workloads and manage multiple projects effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to build and maintain stakeholder relationships.
  • Understanding of health and safety management in construction and rural land management.
  • Practical knowledge of habitat creation, restoration, ecological mitigation, and wildlife legislation.

 

Qualifications & Certifications:

  • Degree or HND in an Environmental or Construction-related discipline.
  • IOSH Managing Safely (essential).
  • NEBOSH qualification (desirable).
  • SMSTS/SSSTS certification (desirable).
  • Membership (or working towards membership) of a relevant professional body (IEMA, CIEM, etc.).
  • CSCS card (Gold/Black).
  • Full UK driving licence.
