ASSISTANT LABORATORY SCIENTIST
Location: Abbey Vet Services, Newton Abbot, Devon
Job type: PART-TIME 24 hours per week
Salary: £11.50 - £12.50 depending on experience. Training will be given.
A great opportunity has arisen at our Veterinary Histology Laboratory in Newton Abbot town centre (Abbey Veterinary Services). As part of our small team, you will support the processing of histological samples for the production of diagnostic slides for both our on site and off site pathologists. Laboratory experience is preferred but not necessary as full guided training will be available. We are seeking a hard working enthusiastic individual with an exceptional eye for detail to join our team. This is a part time permanent post which is available immediately. You will be required to work a minimum of 24 hours a week with an 8am start over three days - Tuesday, Wednesday and alternate Friday and Saturday, and be flexible to cover holiday and sickness. Days may be different while training.
Job Role:
· Tissue dissection and recording macroscopic descriptions
· Unpacking and labelling samples
· Cytology staining
· Loading specimens into the automated tissue processor
· Routine chemical changes
· Preparing samples for sending to other diagnostic laboratories
· Archiving histological blocks and slides
· Ensuring that equipment is clean and in good working order
Essential:
· High levels of accuracy and attention to detail
· Ability to learn and develop new skills quickly
· Good written and spoken communication skills
· Methodical working manner and good organisation skills
· Enthusiasm in science and the wellbeing of animals
· Flexibility and availability to work extra days when needed
· The ability to build good working relationships with colleagues at all levels.
· A desire to work as part of a team
Experience:
· Laboratory experience an advantage but not essential. All necessary training will be provided.
