Summary
Bakelite is looking for a creative and highly motivated Senior Scientist to join our Analytical R&D Team. The Senior Scientist will assist our Analytical team with hands-on analysis of resin product(s) and technologies through the utilization of the scientific method and testing. Your expertise in analytical and thermal techniques will contribute to solving complex characterization challenges across Bakelite’s family of products.
Job Description & Responsibilities
- Plan and execute advanced analytical testing of raw materials, polymer, contaminants, and resin products, using advanced instrumentation, for our R&D, operations, and business customers.
- Utilize singular or combinations of analytical techniques, such as, but not limited to, GC, LC, FTIR, NMR and various thermal techniques (DMA, DSC, TGA, TMA, and Rheometry) to acquire, interpret, and report the necessary data to advance Bakelite’s strategic priorities.
- Collaborate and provide analytical support to Bakelite R&D, manufacturing plants, customers (internal and external), and regulatory efforts.
- Utilizing existing and implement new analytical technologies to foster innovation across the analytical and R&D communities.
- Solicit input from area experts and make knowledgeable decisions. Utilize available resources and databases to regularly review technical information, patents, internal reports, and literature pertinent to field of expertise.
- Accurately document, communicate technical work, keep organized records of experiments, procedures, and results; preparing technical reports, summaries, and presentations as required.
- Manage chemical and supply inventory, order chemicals and supplies when needed; comply with all GLP, EHS policies, and job training requirements to safely perform all job duties.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry with 10+ years or Master’s Degree in Chemistry with 5+ years of relevant experience in the field of Analytical Chemistry or Polymer Science.
- Good working knowledge and understanding of multiple analytical techniques such as HPLC, GC, FT-IR, NMR, DSC, DMA, and Rheometry.
- Serious safety focus with a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (both written and verbal) in a multi-disciplinary, fast-paced research environment; ability to multi-task to meet research and development needs.
- Ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative team environment; mentor and develop scientists as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD in Chemistry with 2+ years of relevant experience in the field of Analytical Chemistry and/or Polymer Science.
- Advanced knowledge, understanding, and ability utilizing NMR spectroscopy and combinations of thermal techniques, such as DSC, DMA, TMA, TGA, and Rheometry, in the pursuit of analyzing and characterizing raw materials, resin, and polymer mixtures.
- Experience performing, developing, and validating analytical methods; knowledge and application of good project management.
- Detail oriented, have strong customer focus, self-motivated, and able to foster collaboration within the Analytical team, global R&D, and Bakelite business and operations.
