Industrial Designer
Purpose of the Job
The Industrial Designer will plan, design, develop and document industrial, commercial or consumer products for manufacture with particular emphasis on ergonomic (human) factors, marketing considerations and manufacturability, and prepare designs and specifications of products for mass or batch production.
Key Responsibilities
- Design print materials following best practice while taking both marketing and commercial goals into account.
- Ownership of design-based projects, working with other designers and client marketing teams.
- Following agreed SLAs
- Adapt artwork provided by client to various designs
- Determines the objectives and constraints of the design brief by consulting with clients and stakeholders.
- Undertakes product research and analyses functional, commercial, cultural and aesthetic requirements.
- Formulates design concepts for industrial, commercial and consumer products.
- Prepares sketches, diagrams, illustrations, plans, samples and models to communicate design concepts.
- Negotiates design solutions with clients, management, sales and manufacturing staff.
- Selects, specifies and recommends functional and aesthetic materials, production methods and finishes for manufacture.
- Details and documents the selected design for production.
- Prepares and commissions prototypes and samples.
- Supervises the preparation of patterns, programmes and tooling, and the manufacture process.
Knowledge, Skills + Experience
- A qualified Industrial Designer with excellent creative and technical skills in print design, strong attention to detail essential.
- 4+ years’ relevant experience in graphics design in an advertising or design agency or internal studio.
- Capable of bringing projects from design to print ready artwork.
- Experience of design for the retail sector will be of particular benefit.
- Experience of scheduling design and artwork work advantageous.
- Excellent working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite, in particular Photoshop, Illustrator and particularly InDesign with data merge experience.
- Highly organized with an internal drive to continuously hit goals and succeed.
- Ability to excel within fast paced, high energy environments.
- Excellent communication skills
- Able to follow recommendations for good practice, and make suggestions for improvements, where possible
- Able to work at speed whilst keeping excellent attention to detail
