Based in Chennai, the Research manager will be responsible for the quality and accuracy of our data sets covering the Legal industry. Our primary data sets are generated from surveys and our secondary data sets are generated from client submissions and desk research conducted by the Data team.

 

The Research manager will report into the Asia Director of Research and will work closely with project managers and product owners in the UK, Bulgaria, Hong Kong and New York to maintain and improve a range of data sets.

 

The Research manager will be proficient in primary quantitative research, data extraction and analysis. The Research Manager will lead and deliver our primary research projects from conception to completion and be responsible for the day-to-day management of the Data team in Chennai, India, coordinating and supervising the daily activities of the team.  This includes implementing best practice processes, management/stakeholder reporting and ensuring tasks are completed on time and to expected quality.

 

The Data team are split into two teams covering day and night shifts.

Objectives

The Research Manager’s role is to deliver our primary research activities and co-ordinate the activities of the Data team based in Chennai.

The Research Manager will be the first point of contact for stakeholders to brief in projects.

The Research Manager will be expected to ensure that all project outcomes are clearly understood and documented before any project commences.

The Research Manager role is to ensure projects are delivered to expected time and accuracy. Projects will primarily focus on delivering our primary research, tracking law firm partner movements, extracting and analysing large data sets, vetting profiles of individuals, cleaning and publishing deal information and maintaining the accuracy of our online data sets such as law firm rankings.

The Research Manager will develop and implement research methodologies and data collection techniques and analyse large datasets to derive actionable insights and support decision-making.

The Research Manager will develop and mentor a team of 5 data analysts in Chennai.

 

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for our Content Management Systems, ensuring the underlying data is complete and accurate.  The data team is responsible for the timely publication of Law firm Rankings, Lawyer ratings and associated Awards.
  • Owning our primary research conducted through surveys. Responsible for developing and delivering quantitative and qualitative surveys, ensuring data accuracy and integrity throughout the research process and providing regular data updates to project stakeholders.
  • Responsible for building and maintaining datasets that support our product propositions in the legal sector.
  • Responsible for building and maintaining a schedule of all projects throughout the year, working with the Asia Director of Research to forecast where there are any conflicts in the schedule and liaising with project stakeholders to resolve these conflicts in the schedule.
  • Responsible for the smooth operation, regular updates and improvement of Talent Tracker - an interactive database tracking partner movements in the global financial legal market.
  • Responsible for the accurate and timely publication of our deals research, including but not limited to IFLR1000 – sources include annual submissions, ad hoc submissions by email and ad hoc submissions by a self-serve tool.
  • Responsible for standardising process notes and tracker tools relating to projects.
  • Responsible for establishing quality assurance processes and undertaking these tasks to ensure projects are delivered to expected quality.
  • Responsible for leading and developing the Data team, comprising of 5 analysts.

Line management

  • This role will report into the Asia Director of Research

Skills and experience

  • Managing, analysing and maintaining large data sets
  • Managing primary research activities - proficiency in our survey platform (Qualtrics), survey design and survey data management
  • Advanced Excel skills (Power query, VBA Macro)
  • Strong proficiency in data analysis tools and software are desirable (e.g., R, Python, SQL, SPSS)
  • Experience with data visualisation tools such as Datawrapper. Knowledge of Tableau, Power BI is a plus

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree or higher (Data Science, Statistics, Economics, Law or a related field)
  • Fluent in English
  • 3 years + experience in a relevant research function
